INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT

In recent years, Marvila has undergone significant infrastructure development, particularly in terms of transportation and public spaces. The neighbourhood is well-connected to the rest of Lisbon, with several bus and tram lines, as well as a major train station that serves regional and long-distance routes.

HISTORY

The area has a long and diverse history, dating back to the Roman period when it was known as "Mouraria." In the 12th century, Marvila became an important industrial center, with mills and factories producing textiles, leather goods, and ceramics.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, Marvila continued to grow as a centre of industry, and it was also an important transportation hub, with a major train station and several ports. However, in the 20th century, Marvila experienced a period of decline as many factories closed down.

In recent years, there has been a revitalisation of Marvila, with new businesses, galleries, and restaurants opening up in the neighbourhood. Today, Marvila is a vibrant and diverse neighboruhood that retains much of its historic charm while also embracing new trends and cultural influences.

THE AREA TODAY

Besides the spacious art galleries, the area is known as Lisbon’s Beer District. Home to artisanal breweries such as Dois Corvos, Lince and Musa, one of the trendiest breweries where you can try many different beers while enjoying live music. Atelier Henrique Sá Pessoa is the creative studio of the 2 Michelin-star-chef, Henrique Sá Pessoa. It offers tailor-made dining experiences to pre-booked groups.

Try Lisbon’s most mysterious restaurant, Aquele Lugar Que Não Existe where it is forbidden to take pictures – you will definitely have an eccentric dining experience! Or, feast on Argentinian steak and dance the tango at the vibrant, El Bulo Social Club.
