INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT

In recent years, there have been several infrastructure developments in the Campo dos Mártires da Pátria area. These include the renovation of the square itself, with the installation of new pavement, benches, and lighting.

Additionally, a new underground car park was built beneath the square, providing much-needed parking space in the busy city center. A new bike lane was also added, encouraging sustainable transportation options.

The nearby Hospital de Dona Estefânia underwent extensive renovations, modernising its facilities and expanding its capacity. And in 2021, the Lisbon City Council announced plans to create a new park and pedestrian zone in the area, further improving the quality of life for residents and visitors.

HISTORY

The square of Campo Mártires de Pátria itself was previously known as Largo do Lavrador and was used for various purposes throughout history, including as a site for bullfights and public executions.

However, in the 19th century, the square was renamed to Campo dos Mártires da Pátria to honor the martyrs of the Liberal Revolution of 1820, which led to the establishment of a constitutional monarchy in Portugal. The revolutionaries who lost their lives during the struggle for freedom were buried in a nearby cemetery, which is now known as the Jardim do Torel.

Today, Campo dos Mártires da Pátria is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and is surrounded by various historic buildings, including the Hospital de Dona Estefânia and the Casa-Museu Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves.

The large green public square has an inviting atmosphere for families with kids and teenagers. It's common to see groups of them playing in its basketball courts and gardens. Around the square it's easy to find many facilities such as local markets, pharmacies, and restaurants.
