HISTORY

Once an uninhabitable strip of land lying between the Salses-Leucate lagoon and the Mediterranean Sea, in the 17th century following the signature of the Treaty of the Pyrenees, a modest port was created in Le Barcarès for the trade of wine, oil, fish, fruit, and salt under the protection of nearby Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque.

By the 19th century, Le Barcarès had become an important fishing port, complete with shipyards producing Catalan-style boats, and in 1929, the town gained official independent status, separating it from Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque. Then in the 1960s following a regional coastal development initiative, Le Barcarès was transformed from a fishing village into the vibrant seaside resort it is today, with new residential complexes, a marina, one of France’s most popular music festivals and a full range of water sports activities that attract visitors from across France and beyond.

THE TOWN TODAY

Le Barcarès occupies a prime location in the Barcelona–Montpellier–Toulouse triangle, benefiting from excellent national and international connections. Direct TGV and Intercités services link it to Paris, Lyon, Toulouse, Montpellier, and Barcelona, making it easily accessible for both weekend visitors and long-stay holidaymakers. The village has a modest year-round population of around 4,000, but in summer it becomes a buzzing hub of over 90,000 people, driving a vibrant seasonal economy and strong rental market.
