Buying a Property in Avenida da Liberdade with Alice Autran Garcia, Athena Advisers.
With a bit more than a kilometre in length and inspired by the broad, open boulevards of Paris, Lisbon’s Avenida da Liberdade was built around the end of the 19th century where there once stood the Passeio Público. Connecting Praça do Marquês de Pombal, the avenue quickly attracted the upper classes who settled into elegant mansions. As time passed, the area changed and the homes of the well-off eventually gave way to offices and renowned commercial establishments losing its original residential character of the past.
Today, Avenida da Liberdade is one of Lisbon’s main thoroughfares where one can find stores for the most coveted luxury brands in the world, as well as hotels, theatres and the beautiful cinema Sao Jorge. Avenida da Liberdade is the most prestigious of Lisbon’s avenues, and despite having a super cosmopolitan side on its main thoroughfare, it also has small oases of tranquillity on its side streets, like the Praça de Alegria.
The square is just behind the avenue, and people who live in the area can walk their dogs and play with their kids. It’s a quiet zone, with beautiful architecture and more residential than the avenue itself. Here you can bump into fashionistas from the area’s fancy shops, businessmen and lawyers. Avenida da Liberdade has an international and cosmopolitan profile. It’s worth mentioning that the average cost on Avenida da Liberdade is roughly €8,000 per sqm where in an equivalent area in London or Paris can run upwards of €30,000 per sqm.
If you are seeking a more refined experience in one of the most high-end neighbourhoods in Lisbon, an apartment in Avenida da Liberdade is the ideal place for you!

A prime, city centre location combined with an internationally desirable address, verdant parks and excellent transport links means property prices on Avenida de Liberdade are understandably high, with the average price for a recently refurbished apartment ranging between €9,000 to €11,500 per square metre. However, when compared to an equivalent neighbourhood in London or Paris, the price per square metre would cost in the region of €30,000.

The streets bustle with well-dressed residents and visitors perusing the boutiques of Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Burberry. The cluster of leading luxury brands draws many discerning visitors to some of the city’s most unique hotels, such as Porto Bay Hotel and Valverde Hotel, and there are also some excellent restaurants such as Luzzo Santa Marta, Sítio Valverde, Cervejaria Liberdade and JNcQUOI. Seen Restaurant offers a delicious Portuguese gastronomic experience in a trendy atmosphere, and if you feel like going for drinks, Sky Bar is among the best rooftop bars with excellent cocktails and live music.
