HISTORY

Intendente is a historic neighborhood in Lisbon that was once known for its bohemian lifestyle and lively cultural scene. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was a popular destination for artists, writers, and intellectuals.

However, in the mid-20th century, the area experienced a decline, with many of its buildings falling into disrepair and becoming associated with poverty and crime. In recent years, the neighbourhood has undergone a revitalisation, with efforts to restore its historic buildings and cultural heritage while also promoting new development and growth.

THE AREA TODAY

Intendente is known for its pop-up restaurants, concerts, markets, art exhibitions and interesting bars. Portuguese tiles play a very important part in the country’s history and culture and in Intendente you will find the iconic Viúva Lamego, a famous tile studio and factory.

Another must-see is the art nouveau architecture of 1908 Lisboa Hotel. Intendente is also close to Graça, where you will find Miradouro da Senhora do Monte with one of the best panoramic views of the city, especially over Mouraria neighbourhood and São Jorge Castle.
