Expert opinion

Morzine offers the best of both worlds: a dual-season resort that’s as much about winter thrills as it is about the laidback alpine lifestyle. For many, its contrasts are what make it unique. Family-friendly, with plenty of chic bars and restaurants, the village retains a welcoming and unpretentious feel while giving snow-lovers access to one of the biggest ski domains in the world. Morzine also remains lively throughout the year, making it an excellent holiday destination, and one with plenty of potential for robust rental yields.

Investment potential

A property purchase in Morzine isn’t just about making memories. The sums add up when it comes to the village’s investment potential too. Thanks to its year-round appeal and easy access to Geneva airport, rental yields can be high throughout the winter season and beyond. The village’s traditionally built wooden chalets – with airy, open spaces and plenty of authentic charm – have enduring appeal for buyers looking for property for sale in Morzine. Plus, if you’re considering one of the new build apartments for sale in Morzine, prices aren’t at the top of the market compared with other resorts – so there’s room for significant capital appreciation.

Infrastructure development

Morzine has an exciting vision for the future with an ambitious plan for new high-speed lifts linking the village to Avoriaz in the offing. If it comes to fruition, connections between the resorts will be faster, making it a breeze for Morzine residents to enjoy Avoriaz’s high altitude snowfalls. Along with the lifts, there are plans for new pistes and better pedestrian access in the village, while recent infrastructure improvements include a new blue run at Pleney, a reroute of the Aigle Rouge run (which now boasts 2000m of length), and an excellent new snow park at the top of the Nyon cable car. So, if you’re looking at property in Morzine you can be confident you’re investing in a world-class resort.

History

Morzine’s first cable car opened in 1934, almost a decade after pioneering local businessman, François Baud, built the village’s original hotel at the foot of Pleney Mountain. But the real catalyst for Morzine’s development came in 1960, when another local, Jean Vuarnet, won gold at the Squaw Valley Olympics. Vuarnet is credited with linking Morzine to nearby resort towns, paving the way for its 316 slopes and 197 ski lifts – and making this beautiful alpine resort the beating heart of Les Portes du Soleil.

The village today

A picture-perfect Alpine setting. An apres-ski scene that’s the envy of its Haut Savoie neighbours. And an authentic soul that can be felt all year round. Welcome to Morzine, the capital of Les Portes du Soleil. As the gateway to the area’s 650km of pristine runs, the village’s easy access to high altitude Avoriaz, reliable snowfalls (among the largest in Europe), and family-friendly feel make it a coveted destination for all winter sports lovers. Once the powder has melted, Morzine and its surrounds become a base camp for outdoor adventures, from hiking and cycling, to climbing and lake swimming – all with a backdrop of breathtaking views. By night, the village’s buzzing social scene and charming architecture create the perfect atmosphere for long, convivial evenings with friends and family.
