HISTORY

A historic neighbourhood in Lisbon, Chiado dates back to the 16th century. Originally an aristocratic area, it became a hub of cultural and intellectual activity in the 19th and early 20th centuries, with many of Portugal's most famous writers, artists, and thinkers frequenting the cafes and theatres in the area.

The area has undergone several transformations over the years, including a devastating fire in 1988 that destroyed many of its iconic buildings. However, Chiado has since been rebuilt and restored to its former glory, and today it is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, known for its charming streets, lively cultural scene, and fashionable shops.

THE AREA TODAY

Chiado is continually evolving and new shops, bars and restaurants are opening up all the time. Palácio do Chiado is a highly recommended restaurant offering traditional Portuguese and international cuisine within the spectacular setting of an 18th-century palace. If you feel like going for a cocktail, try Silk Club.

As an area historically known for its intellectual connections, there are several statues of literary figures such as Fernando Pessoa, one of Portugal’s greatest poets, sitting outside Café A Brasileira. Its busy streets are also home to several theatres and great shopping experiences such as Armazém of Chiado, with its luxury shops.

Be sure to visit the historic ruins of Convento do Carmo, check out the stunning views from Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcantara and visit Museu do Chiado (National Museum of Contemporary Art) with works from the second half of the 19th century.
