The dark horse of the Côte d’Azur, Toulon is a little rougher around the edges than the rest of the towns in this region but, regardless, this former naval port is a unique and interesting town full of character. It has one of the largest populations of the Riviera, with nearly 170,000 permanent residents.

Thriving off its heritage as a port town, it is still possible to find little dive bars named after local residents, and many oriental restaurants offering an exotic touch to the generally dominant French cuisine of the coast. There are many cafés with terraces and interesting shopping opportunities at Space Mayol. Properties in the area are cheaper than the rest of the Riviera and offer a really unique architectural style. Toulon is a great place for a property investment or a second home for those who want a little more than just a sunny beachside city.
