Avoriaz

Often considered to be the best built-for-purpose resort in France, Avoriaz is a modern village on the French side of Les Portes du Soleil. Benefiting from the main chair lift of the region, the resort is connected to the town of Châtel in one direction and Champéry in the other and all are connected by gondolas. It offers 38km of cross-country ski trails spread over eight loops.

Despite the area being very modern with angular and stark high-rise apartment buildings, the village still manages to be uniquely attractive. Avoriaz has not jumped on the bandwagon of five-star hotels and resorts, so it still feels quite quaint, despite being one of the most popular villages in Les Portes du Soleil area. No door is farther away than 500m from shops or bars as the village is very compact.

Given its high altitude (1,100m to 2,466m), the resort enjoys sunny skies, yet the slopes manage to remain beautifully filled with shade. It has guaranteed snowfall from December to April, with an average of 8m of snowfall per winter. In the summer, the resort becomes a centre for trekking, golf and mountain biking. Despite being very sports driven, the town has a great selection of restaurants, but more importantly bars and nightclubs. The town is famous for its varied music selection and houses a series of music events and festivals each year.

The village is fully integrated into Les Portes du Soleil and the streets are all traffic free. It is a fantastic area to ski the pistes and come back to enjoy the dancing in the evenings.
