One Day in Paris with Caroline de Maigret

Following on from our insider interview with fashionista-cum-author Caroline de Maigret, we delve into her Black-Book for spots not to miss for the authentic Parisian Experience.

Breakfast:

A bit of a cliche spot but I love Café de Flore, perched quaintly on the corner of Boulevard Saint-Germain in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. One of the most classic coffee-houses in Paris, writers, actors and the occasional celebrity crowd the terraced tables serving excellent coffee and croissants – the perfect breakfast place.

Mid-morning:

For a dose of culture, I go to the Le Bal photography gallery not far from my house. This avant-garde, independent gallery is a bit of a local secret, frequented only by Parisians ‘in-the-know’. I often just stop by to see what is on display at the time. The owners are experimental and innovative, taking real risks with the artists they exhibit. It’s more than photos on a wall – there is a real message, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics.

Lunch

A favorite lunch spot is Les Bols De Jean, the restaurant of a great friend of mine. The talented Chef Jean Imbert treads a fine line between haute French cuisine and cheap, fast food. The constantly buzzing restaurant serves soft bread ‘bowls’ filled with seasonal and locally sourced, organic produced. It’s great for a quick, tasty bite to eat on the go.

2 Rue de Choiseul, 2nd arrondissement, Paris

Mid-Afternoon

Jardin des Plantes is a great spot for an afternoon in Paris. Part of the Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle (Natural History Museum), the verdant gardens offer an oasis of fresh air in the city. The dinosaur museum (Galerie de Paléontologie) is a treat for kids and adults alike, especially when the light hits the glass and wooden structure, it’s beautiful.

57 Rue Cuvier, 75005 Paris

Merci

Merci is one of my favorite multi-brand stores to go shopping. It’s one of those rare places in Paris where you can find everything you want to buy all under one roof; from designers, furniture, houseware to cosmetics. The clothing lines are simple and timeless, exactly how I like to dress, and range from famous to unknown designers for both men and women. The creators have exceptional taste and also have the good sense to stock my book.

Drinks

My go-to-spot for an evening drink is Le Mansart. Located in SoPi (South Pigalle), the bar is more than just a hipster hangout, it’s a fun-filled, fuss-free, retro 50s-style bar. It attracts a fun crowd, has a fun owner (the same owner as Le Sans Souci up the road) and plays great rock and roll music that I love – I’m always happy here.

Dinner

The Le Chateaubriand restaurant has been heralded as spearheading a mini-revolution in Parisian dining. For me it’s innovative without being annoying, serving delicious french haute cuisine, minus the uptight service and extortionate prices. Chef Inaki Aizpitarte is a fantastic chef with a difference, you can hear him from the kitchen listening to rock music. Only the first seating can be reserved and there’s always a clamour for tables, so be warned, plan ahead.

129 Avenue Parmentier, 75011 Paris

Late Night/Dancing

Le Mano is the new spot in Paris favored by cool and trendsetting parisians, without being pretentious or arrogant. Bursting with electro salsa latino vibes, it’s a great place to dance the night away with friends and handmade cocktails.

10 Rue Papillon, 75010 Paris

Your favourite weekend getaway 2 hours from Paris?

I have a country house in an area called Essonne, 45 minutes south of Paris by car. It’s the middle of nowhere, surrounded by a big lake and forest, with no internet and no telephone signal – the perfect weekend getaway.
