Designing for the Future: London's newest neighborhood

A ground-breaking mixed-use development, centred around an iconic London landmark, is set to create a whole new neighbourhood in the heart of the capital.

Londoners are long used to the endless crawl of the city’s borders.  From Walthamstowe to Peckham, suburbs once considered far-reaching are ever evolving into the city’s next hip districts thanks to decades of a booming housing market. But a new neighborhood, popping up in a prime location along the leafy banks of the Thames? It’s unexpected. But then so it’s a lot about the Battersea Power Station development.

Centered around the restoration of iconic London landmark Battersea Power Station, the international development consortium behind the project selected two of the world’s leading architects, Frank Ghery and Norman Foster, to craft a dynamic residential and lifestyle space that feels totally in line with 21st century living.  Spectacular apartments have been designed to maximize views of the power station and the river, flooding properties with natural light. Combined with a 24-hour concierge, extensive leisure facilities, eco-credentials and access to one of the largest private roof gardens in Europe, its inspiration living in  iconic landmark architecture.  Developed in partnership with the City of London, 2020 will see the opening of Battersea Power station tube, connecting the new neighborhood with the rest of London via the Northern line.

With its good schools, river-side location and verdant park, Battersea is a firm favorite with families and first-time buyers seeking peaceful, bucolic surroundings without the multi-millions now needed for buying a property in Chelsea. Its definitive yummy-mummy territory, yet plagued by poor connecting transport links and a large ground area, it’s only evolved in pockets and never fully realized its potential.  As a result, this development is set to have a significant impact on London and the local property market. Combining ground-breaking architecture with a destination shopping and dining street and improved transport links, expect its aspirational living credentials to attract a whole new demographic of buyer.
