James Ramsden, Pidgin London - Athena Journal

Once famous for its rhyming slang and traditional pubs, East London has evolved into London’s hippest district. Following on from our chat last week with co-owner of Pidgin London and foodie enthusiast James Ramsden on life in Hackney, we uncover his favorite spots not to miss for the authentic Hackeny experience.

Breakfast:

Pavilion Café

Set just off Victoria Park, they have the best bacon sandwich by a country mile. It’s the perfect spot to sit by the lake and watch the ducks

Dishoom

This buzzy, Bombay-style restaurant serves Indian street food with a modern twist. Their Bacon Naan Roll is something really special.

Mid-morning:

Broadway Market

This is a lively shopping street nestled in the heart of East London, with a myriad of traders ranging from street food to arts and crafts. It’s a great place to wander through with friends on the weekend, sampling the kaleidoscope of different treats on offer.

Lunch:

For a bit of tradition, I love to stop by the The Spurstowe Arms, an unassuming east-end boozer for a pint on the weekend.

Tonkotsu - By London’s revered Ramen pros, their tasty, thick and rich stock plus handmade flour noodles are the best you’re going to find in the city.

Mid-Afternoon

The V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green is a great place for kids and adults, packed with playful objects from throughout history including hand-on stuff, toys and games.

Drinks

Boundary

What isn’t there to love about an alfresco rooftop cocktail spot in the heart of East London with stunning views of City skyline at night.

Dinner

8 Hoxton Square

In an area that was once favored by beer-clutching creatives grabbing a burger on the go, 8 Hoxton Square has delivered a real dining destination spot with modern European food and fantastic value wine.
8 Hoxton Square, London N1 6NU

Late Night

Pidgin

Drop by Pidgin at the end of the night for some cheese and a nightcap. Grab a seat at the bar and sample our signature Pidgincello or Pink Grapefruit and Black Pepper Gin & Tonic.
52 Wilton Way, London E8 1BS

London’s best kept secret

Pinch Hackney

This is definitely London’s best kept secret. A tiny and super-romantic wine bar just around the corner from the restaurant. It's brilliant.
